3D Projection Mapping by Pearl Media Productions

As seen in The Press-Enterprise

After spending a day listening to great music at Coachella, attendees witnessed a mid-century, Palm Springs mansion complete with a pool (yes, a pool!), dance floor and hundreds of guests. But was it real? It was actually “Mirage,” the highly praised 3D projection experience created specifically for Coachella by Pearl Media Productions in collaboration with artist Paul Clemente.

COACHELLA 2013: Swimming pool is just a ‘Mirage’

By Nikie Johnson – April 12, 2013

A swimming pool at Coachella? Not quite. It’s part of an art installation, “Mirage,” that debuted tonight.

Most people entering earlier today probably noticed a big, white, house-looking building. A lot of people were taking shelter under its shade. But when the sun went down, the cool stuff started.

At 40 feet tall, 80 feet wide and 100 feet long, it’s designed to look like a Mid-Century Modern Palm Springs mansion, according to Pearl Media Productions, which created it. There are spotlights on several of the outside walls, which people are using to take shadow portraits of themselves.

But the coolest part is a structure that looks like a swimming pool, with video of women floating and swimming around being projected down. It’s sorta trippy. And people are having a hard time resisting jumping in, though they’re quickly getting shoed away by the staff.

More from a news release: “To bring this immersive 3D projection to life, Pearl Media Productions will use a total of 21 26K HD Barco projectors, eight media servers and utilize a total of 12 zones of HD projection. The result is a breathtaking, full 360-degree ever-changing immersive experience. Pearl Media Productions not only designed the video system, but created more than 330 separate HD files for this installation. They will use 18 gigs of custom created content and more than 70 facets of individual video over the course of the six-day festival.”

It ran five hours a night every night of both festival weekends.

First-Ever On-Bicycle Advertising Allows Brands to Own the Streets, Reach On-the-Go Consumers With Ecofriendly Program

MIAMI – April X, 2013 – Pearl Media today announced the company has partnered with Miami Beach’s DECOBIKE, a revolutionary public bicycle sharing and rental program, to launch the city’s first-ever, on-bicycle advertising solution. The out-of-home advertising alternative provides brands a cost-effective way to reach consumers across 95 percent of the exclusive Miami South Beach market. Retailer H&M has signed on as the first advertiser, utilizing the eco-friendly, on-bike advertising to promote its 2013 Conscious Collection, a more sustainable fashion line, and to drive traffic to the South Beach H&M retail store.

“Our DECOBIKE program is custom made for brands like H&M who want to actively reach consumers in a new, non-intrusive way. Your brand goes where the consumer goes, offering millions of active impressions,” said Josh Cohen, President/CEO of Pearl Media. “We are providing greater coverage, consumer penetration and brand awareness in one the country’s most challenging but sought out out-of-home markets. In a city with no billboards and very few bus shelters, our DECOBIKE program provides the only way to blanket the market with your message.”

H&M ads will run on 40 bike stations and on the baskets of more than 900 bikes throughout Miami’s South Beach through April 14. Ads are viewable by cars on the street and passers-by. Pearl Media can provide brand ambassadors and street teams to supplement brand awareness and offer product sampling and distribution. Social media applications including QR codes and NFC tags can also be incorporated to drive retail activity.

“DECOBIKE is dedicated to providing and operating world-class public bike sharing programs to forward-thinking cities, providing easy-to-use, environmentally conscious transportation throughout Miami’s South Beach,” said Ricardo Pierdant, President of DECOBIKE. “We’re thrilled to have a great retailer like H&M as a partner. Importantly, the program kiosk ads are the only large format ads available in Miami South Beach, other than bus shelters. I’m confident H&M will benefit materially.”

Pearl Media is the U.S. leader in immersive 3D projection experiences, interactive storefronts and large format outdoor campaigns, known for leveraging display areas, both large and small, for innovative programs to create lasting impressions for brands. In partnership with Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and Starcom, the Chevy experience was the first-ever interactive 3D projection.

Using a single-minded idea and the latest 3D interactive technology, consumers were able to navigate the giant 3D projected claw using a 3 foot stick shift at street level, in front of Hollywood’s storied Roosevelt Hotel – on which the game was projected. Hundreds of people took control of the device in an attempt to win prizes. One lucky winner walked away with the Grand Prize: a 2012 Chevy Sonic.

‘Twas the night before Valentine’s and all through the Strip, plenty of creatures were stirring, especially Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models.

The night before Valentine’s Day, on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 11 p.m. Eastern, Pearl Media Productions put on “one of the largest 3D mapping projections ever conceived” for the launch of the 2013 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, according to a release from Pearl Media.

By using the exterior architecture of Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas as a giant canvas, Pearl Media projected a 51,000-square-foot 3D mapping projection experience entitled “7 Continents, 17 Wonders of the World” poolside at the hotel. The show featured images of the famed Swimsuit issue’s supermodels, including cover model Kate Upton, surrounded by 3D images such as elephants and Easter Island-style moai.

The show was mapped out on a 360-foot -by-141-foot screen size, for 50,760 square feet of mapped video, and used 30 Barco HDF-W26 26,000-lumen projectors with four V3 Sandy Bridge Green Hippo media servers running in Uber Pan with internal Parrots.

According to Pearl Media, this was just one of many 3D projection experiences the company has executed this year for clients: Pearl also made a downtown Los Angeles building disappear on behalf of and LoopNet, projected a 2012 NFL season “Rajun Tailgate” recap for Pepsi in New Orleans at the Super Bowl, and created a projection experience for the opening of Tommy Hilfiger’s first Beverly Hills store.

It has been an incredible first quarter for us, thanks to you. Since January 17, we’ve made a downtown Los Angeles building disappear on behalf of LoopNet and projected a 2012 NFL season “Rajun Tailgate” recap for Pepsi in New Orleans at the Super Bowl. We’re also implementing a projection experience for the opening of Tommy Hilfiger’s first Beverly Hills store – on the same night as the SI Swimsuit extravaganza.

There will be more to come before this quarter is over, and we’ll keep you posted.

In the interim, please enjoy the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 3D experience – you won’t regret it!

Pearl Media used the Astor Crowne Plaza, at the corner of Canal and Bourbon Streets, as its canvas to create a “Keep the Party Rajun” building projection experience for Pepsi. Beginning January 31 and continuing through Super Bowl, the Astor was brought to life through a massive 2D projection celebrating Pepsi, Tostidos and NFL tailgate culture. The size and scale of the projection, coupled with the location, ensured that consumers were engaged with the messaging on their way from downtown New Orleans to other main events – including the Super Bowl.

A Pepsi and Tostidos building wrap, below the projection, added to the experience to help create lasting impressions for the brands. See it for yourself here: http://vimeo.com/58978408.

LOS ANGELES – January 18, 2013 – In a first-of-its-kind experience, Pearl Media, a non-traditional media company specializing in groundbreaking out-of-home brand experiences and Creative i, a Palo Alto-based integrated communications firm, teamed to erase a building from Los Angeles’ storied skyline last night for CoStar Group’s LoopNet.com, the #1 marketplace for commercial real estate online. Using state-of-the-art 3D projection technology, the companies visually demonstrated that ‘if a commercial property isn’t advertised on LoopNet Premium Lister, it might as well be invisible.’ Onlookers watched as the 12-story building on W. 9th Street between S. Olive and Hill Street vanished right before their eyes.
Creative i developed an integrated communications program for LoopNet built around a simple, powerful message. The program culminated in an exclusive, VIP event celebrating L.A. commercial real estate luminaries, for which Creative i turned to Pearl Media to develop the first-of-its-kind 3D projection experience. In addition to creating the 3D projection, Pearl Media handled the full event production for the evening. Grammy® Award-winning band Train also took to the stage for a special performance during the much-anticipated event.

“We wanted to drive home LoopNet’s message within a visual experience that’s big, bold and undeniably bodacious,” said Rick Mathieson, Vice President and Creative Director at Creative i. “This 3D projection delivers on that objective – big time.”

“The disappearing building experience demonstrates Pearl Media’s ability to push the limits of 3D projection, and simply and beautifully demonstrates LoopNet’s brand promise, while creating a lasting impression with its core consumers,” said Josh Cohen, President and CEO of Pearl Media. “The great benefit of 3D projection is that it works as a live experience, which can then be shared exponentially online and via social media. This program also allowed us to showcase our 360 production capabilities. We created a breakthrough 3D projection, as well as designed and produced the staging, lighting and event for this A-list act and client.”

Starting today, consumers can enter to win an American Special Telecaster guitar by Fender signed by the Train at www.LoopNet.com/LATrafficJam. There, fans can earn a second entry by sharing the video of the vanishing building after they’ve submitted their entry.

Pearl Media, a leader in 3D architectural mapping who specializes in transforming buildings into unique, vibrant, interactive out-of-home experiences, has created large-scale projections for clients including Lexus, Chevy, THQ and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment – among others. To successfully achieve the illusion, Pearl Media utilized state-of-the-art, high-powered projectors, as well as its proprietary advanced 3D mapping technology, lighting, sound, shadows and animation to precisely map the 3D projection to the contours of the building.

Founded in 1995, LoopNet.com is the most heavily trafficked commercial real estate marketplace online with more than 6.5 million registered members and nearly 3.5 million unique monthly visitors. With the addition of thousands of new members per week, the company continues to unveil new offerings in mobile solutions, email campaign management tools and more – all designed to help commercial real estate brokers, owners and others market their properties as never before possible.

Los Angeles indie rock band, Love in the Circus

Music can be as much about the visuals as it is about the sound. Among the more intriguing demonstrations of this at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show was a video display in the Sony booth from an independent band called Love in the Circus.

Forget holograms. The Los Angeles based band used projection imaging to create a live stage that evokes a Cirque du Soleil-esque setting, wrapping custom animations around a physical stage set.

The technique, called 3D projection mapping, has been used by electronic dance musicians, including Amon Tobin during his “ISAM” tour last summer, to turn the live stage into a psychedelic, futuristic metropolis. It involves using computer graphics to create a three-dimensional map of the stage environment, much like in a computer game. The designer then makes computer graphics textures and animations for the stage, treating stage surfaces like polygons in a video game.

Click here to check out a video that the group made to explain how they did it.

Love in the Circus took the process a step further by repurposing the visual assets created for the stage into their new music video, “Inside.” You can see the results of their experiments in the following video.

Chris Brickler, the band’s guitarist, said the whole process took three weeks and would have cost $150,000 if it weren’t for Sony, which donated the cameras and video editing software, and Pearl Media Productions, which helped the band design the visuals.

But as technology rides down that cost curve, and professional grade cameras come within reach of regular consumers, Brickler expects that 3D projection mapping could become a standard tool for performing artists in all genres.
